The Campsite

The campsite ‘Champ de la Chapelle’ is to be found in the rural centre of France not far from the cities of St.Amand-Montrond, Montluçon, Bourges, Moulins and Vichy.

Situated in ‘Le fôret de Tronçais‘, one of the most beautiful oak forests in Europe, it offers a wonderful stay for anyone who loves sport, nature and culture. The campsite totals 5.5 hectares so there is plenty of room to spread out, there are pitches with electricity of 100m2 and 200 m2 and the pitches without electric are very spacious. There is a small shop, a bar/cafe with a shady terrace and free wifi, making it an ideal place for a drink or a bite to eat.

We offer 60 three-star places with 10 amp electricity hook-ups and water points or it is possible to choose a pitch without electricity, the choice is yours.

The Surrounding Areas

In the Allier department of the Auvergne, in the splendid oak forest ‘La Forêt de Tronçais’, lies our campsite ‘Champ de la Chapelle’’, not far from the little villages of Braize and St.Bonnet-Tronçais.

The Allier offers a variety of landscapes; the valleys of the rivers Allier and Cher and the famous landscape of the Bocage Bourbonnais as well as the foothills of the Massif Central with its extinct volcanoes.

The ‘Fôret de Tronçais’ is a regional natural park of 11 000 hectares. The forest is famous for its oak trees, some of which are 300 years old. The area is home to a truly exceptional range of flora and fauna including deer, boar and mushrooms of every kind. The forest is also a favourite with those who enjoy walking, riding or cycling along the shady paths or swimming and fishing in one of the many lakes. We can give the sports fisherman advice on where to buy a fishing permit. You can decide whether to purchase a local permit for small lakes only or an extended permit for fishing in big rivers and major lakes.

The forest is between the ‘Berry’ and the land of the ancient kings of Bourbon and offers an ideal starting point for visiting the lovely medieval towns, the many chateaux and other historical places of interest. For the active visitor the Allier and especially the Forest of Tronçais is paradise. On your mountain bike you can follow the sand paths and on a tour bike you can take long or short trips along the lanes across the hilly landscape.

Maps of the area are for sale in the Bureau of Tourism and shops.

The lake ‘Etang de Saint Bonnet’ is no more than 5 kms away and has a sandy beach where you can swim safely with a lifeguard present. The village of Saint-Bonnet itself has a few shops, a bar/pizzeria, a doctor and a pharmacy.
